Sara Klar was born in Far Rockaway, New York into a fundamentalist orthodox Jewish family of Eastern European heritage. As a child, she loved reading and studied English literature at Brooklyn College, Barnard and Columbia University. Shortly thereafter, Klar broke with her culture, moved into Soho and began going to museums to explore what formerly had been forbidden.

Since then she has been an artist and continues her creative practice from her studio in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
